Like enough for the whole UO Football team....... Stephie was given this zucchini on her doorstep from her neighbor and she oh-so-kindly offered to give it to me. (I guess because we do like zucchini bread). I think it is headed for the yard waste bin- from what I remember hearing, if they are that big, they arent any good. Any truth to that, anyone? (I am cut and pasting these question marks..... I so need to get this keyboard fixed!)
On to other seasonal produce - these two pumpkins came out of OUR very own pumpkin patch. Truth be told, this grand adventure was something I had dreams of dazzling you all with, showing pictures of the monster pumpkins, baby pumpkins, luminary pumpkins all emerging from our rookie garden area - but, alas, these two are the only true prizes to show off - outside of two cute tiny pumpkins I have had decorating the house since September. Once again, if anyone has any great pumpkin growing tips, I am all ears, because, from the ten plants we put in the ground last May, this is a bit of a disappointment. However, being able to etch our name in the pumpkin right in our back yard was VERY COOL.......

Very cool pumpkin.
My understanding is that when a zucchini is really big, it doesn't have as much flavor so it isn't great to eat plain or in a stew or whatever. But, the larger ones work just fine for zucchini bread!
I had heard that big zucchinis have big seeds and that's why they're less useful...but I'm with Jodi, most people who get the big ones make sure to use them for bread.
I've tried growing pumpkins and had pretty bad results. They always get that mildew stuff and the vines wither away.
BTW I love that table with the display top!
Yes, that mildew thing is what happened with us too! I will have to research it and figure out how to make prize pumpkins.......
And thanks for table compliment. That is our coffee table that has Harvest stuff in the autumn, boughs and red ball ornaments at Christmas, and dried hydrangeas for the rest of the year. I like it too, now that I finally figured out something (hydrangeas) for the other 9 months of the year.
I think the zucchini will still get tossed. The amount of work just to shred that thing doesnt seem worth the dollar I would save to buy it at 1% of its size in the store.
I have a friend who dropped off zucchinis on my porch this summer, and since I can't stand to throw away perfectly good veggies I have them gathering dust on my microwave...sending waves of guilt that I'm not turning them into bread...and do you know how long zucchinis keep before they finally start to get a little soft and you can throw them out?? Months!
Yes - make bread! It tastes great - its just a lot of sugar - I bet you it would taste similar if you left out the zucchini:-). Just kidding.
Okay - so we have prize pumpkins this year. Four of them! We did nothing different than last year. We had a few great ones last year too but WOW. Give me a day and I'll post a picture of them on my blog!
