Every Season

I love seasons. I love that Oregon is spectacular in its transitions and how obvious the differences are with each time of year (except for last Jan/Feb - that was just funky..... it really messed with my "Seasonal Affective Disorder'!) I really love this time of year, but each season holds such special promise and uniqueness it's hard to pick a favorite. I also love considering the symbolism behind the seasons which is why this is one of my absolute favorite songs... "Every Season" by Nicole Nordeman. I love how it describes the different transitions of a person's life and how God has a plan for each of these times. I have friends in every season right now - and can certainly indicate being in each of these seasons within the last year and a half. What season would you say you are at right now? After quite a 2004 settled in "winter" - and eventually spring - 2005 has been a summer for us. May I never take that for granted.

every evening sky, an invitation to trace the pattern stars
and early in july, celebration for freedom that is ours
and i notice You in childrens' games
in those who watched them from the shade
every drop of sun is full of fun and wonder
You are summer

and even when the trees, have just surrendered to the harvest time
forfeiting their leaves in late september
and sending us inside, still i notice You when change begins
and i am braced for colder winds
i will offer thanks, for what has been and what's to come
You are autumn

and everything in time, and under heaven finally falls asleep
wrapped in blankets white, all creation shivers underneath
and still i notice You, when branches crack and in my breath on frosted glass
even now in death, You open doors for life to enter
You are winter

and everything thats new, has bravely surfaced
teaching us to breathe
what was frozen through, is newly purposed
turning all things green, so it is with You
and how You make me new, with every season's change
and so it will be, as You are recreating me
summer, autumn, winter, spring

  1. I remember you playing this song for a group of us, possibly on the way to a WOF conference, many years ago. I hesitate to say it, but I am definitely in Summer. I have realized that quite a bit lately: life is good. Nothing to complain about. Healthy. Happy. But for some reason this scares me, which I know is wrong, but it does. I start bracing for the next season I guess. Personality flaw.

  2. I'm in Winter....just kidding; I just wanted to peak everyone's curiosity for a second.
I am like Jodi, in Summer and kinda scared about it, and I too know that is wrong. I have always said, maybe for my own comforting, that God doesn't give us anymore than we can handle. But then in Church a few Sundays ago a pastor kinda refuted that by saying he believes God puts us in a weak spot so we have to search and lean on him. Yikes! I am not good at being weak......

  3. This is one of my favorite Nicole Nordeman songs. I heard her sing it at the 2004 Women of Faith. It was just Nicole and her piano. It was delightful.

Right now I find myself relating to the last verse. "and everything thats new, has bravely surfaced
teaching us to breathe what was frozen through, is newly purposed turning all things green, so it is with You and how You make me new, with every season's change."

Jeff and I are so encouraged by the changes that God allows in our lives. We can sit back and talk about where we started in our walks with the Lord and with each other and compare it to where we are now. We get energized by the possibilities that lay out ahead.
