Which Did You Choose Dad?

This picture was taken on Thanksgiving - when we celebrated Dad's birthday, which fell on Tuesday this year. We decided - as Dad is always so hard to buy for - to this year give him some quality collegiate gear - each from the team we respectively cheer for. We included in the box a note suggesting he make a choice on which jacket he'd wear today - as he watched the Civil War game.

As I've pointed out before - because Michael is an alum of OSU - there's no doubt who the Schillings root for. Michele and I did not grow up as fans of football - particularly since during our formative years our hometown football team was horrible. (Not a pretty era of UO football).

John and I have been fans of Duck football since 1996. It was the first year of our marriage and I picked up a buy-one-get-one-free ticket for a Duck football game. I thought it would make a fun date night. All it took was that first night for us to get hooked. The next year, we were season ticket holders - and we've described the experience as a "Mastercard" commercial in that our 6-7 home games each year of "dates with our spouse" as priceless. We "joined the bandwagon" at just the right time, as during these 13 years the Ducks have become a powerful force in the Pac 10. Supporting this team has only gotten sweeter with our participation in the lives of UO students.....

I would dare say that tonite's game might be the biggest game we've ever seen - our annual Civil War has become the War for the Roses. For the first time ever, one of our Oregon teams will be represented in the Rose Bowl. Tonight will determine which team. What a game. And, just like every year, I am watching it at home. Traditionally, Michele and I forsake our season ticket to the other sister's husband each year we have the home game. Michael was so giddy - and frankly, I'm glad I'm not in the freezing temps and am happy to be here in the house, cozy with Michele. (Especially since I have a full-fledge head cold going on).

So, what can I say - other than, since it is my blog.....

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DUCKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

  1. As much as we anticipate this fun night, it always kind of sucks when somebody has to lose. Both teams totally showed up and played hard, the margin of victory was only 4 points. In the end, the Ducks are headed to the Rose Bowl......WOW. How amazing is that?!

I'm really trying hard this morning to adopt the attitude of "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em..." - but the loss still stings... :(
Regardless, way to go Ducks! While our Beavs played with a lot of heart and more than met our expectations of bringing their "A" game - the Ducks played better and should look to the Rose Bowl with well earned enthusiasm. What's more to say than "there's always next year..." :)
